A multi-functional hedge is a beautiful and biologically diverse component of urban landscapes. These multi-tiered assemblages of trees, shrubs, ground covers, vines, grasses, flowers and herbs that can border fields, waterways or city lots.
During this workshop we invite you to design a hedgerow where you live or for a special project. This class will discuss:
A historical perspective of hedge plantings
How to determine a site to install a hedge in urban/suburban settings on any scale
Basic design principles and techniques: if applicable, draw a rough draft of a location you would like to install a hedgerow.
The diverse functions of a hedge, such as: soil stabilization, windbreaks, encouraging beneficial insects, shelter and food for wildlife and people, privacy screening as well as ways to diversify your income.

Steps to establishment, maintenance and assessment
Examples and resources
This virtual class will feature a live, interactive lecture with slide show and time for questions and answers with the instructor. A detailed outline with recommended resources will also be provided. We will be using Zoom for this class, which you can use on your computer or phone.

About the instructor: Jude Hobbs is an internationally recognized permaculturist with 35 years' experience in the design and teaching fields and a co-founder of the Permaculture Institute of North America (PINA). Through her businesses, Agro-Ecology Northwest and Cascadia Permaculture, she utilizes whole-system design in urban and rural settings to co-create environmentally sound solutions that inspire sustainable actions. Jude specializes in optimizing resource conservation, biodiversity, watershed enhancement and income diversification. She is the co-author of the OSU Publication, A Guide to Hedgerows: Plantings That Enhance Biodiversity, Sustainability and Functionality. (EM8721)
