Beacon Food Forest Foraging Fun Tours

This is the first class in a three-part series focused on foraging at the Beacon Food Forest. Participants are welcome to sign up for a single class or attend the full series. Each session will explore a different aspect of the Beacon Food Forest — from the wide variety of plants growing onsite to the principles of food forestry, permaculture, and the history and philosophy behind BFF.

Join one or more of these classes for a guided tour through the Beacon Food Forest followed by a relaxing activity. A perfect peaceful start to your weekend. Suitable for all ages; children should be accompanied by an adult - they can participate for free and will enjoy the hands-on adventures!

Tours will provide a general overview of the Beacon Food Forest, as well as include visits to sites suitable for foraging for materials for the day’s main activity. Class participants will learn about the variety of plants growing at BFF, food forestry/permaculture, Beacon Food Forest history; philosophy, and learn about how to find and make use of plants to produce delicious foods or drinks and beautiful decorations for their home.

Activities associated with this tour will be as follows:

June 7 – Foraging for herbs - we’ll make an herb bouquet to take home and make tea on site with herbs such as mint, fennel, or raspberry leaves which we’ll enjoy with herb shortbread cookies and crackers spread with herb compound butters. (Vegan/Gluten free options available)

Presenter

Eleanor Goodall is a longtime volunteer and active member of the Beacon Food Forest community. Since 2020, she has been leading tours and helping grow the BFF Education Committee's programs. Eleanor brings her love of gardening, habitat restoration, and foraging to her work at BFF, where she enjoys connecting people to the land and each other. When she is not volunteering at BFF, she enjoys working in her own garden, doing habitat restoration work, foraging for mushrooms and other wild edibles, singing, hiking, and spending time with family and friends.

Location:

Meet at the Beacon Food Forest Gathering Plaza, where a Beacon Food Forest volunteer guide will lead you on a tour through the site. You’ll learn about the food forest’s design, the wide variety of edible and useful plants growing there, and discover the best spots to harvest the season’s bounty.

In this first session, the focus will be on foraging for herbs that are perfect for brewing delicious teas.

After the tour we’ll return to the Gathering Plaza to relax, socialize, and create something nice from our foraged seasonal materials.
